Jussi Nuorteva, Director General of the National Archives, will leave the duties of the director general on 25 October 2021. He will retire on 1 June 2022. Päivi Happonen, Research Director, will be the acting director general until the appointment of a new director general. The Government will appoint a new director general for the National Archives in the spring of 2022.
Jussi Nuorteva, DTh, PhLic, docent, has been working as the director general of the National Archives and the National Archivist of Finland since 2003. He is the chairman of the Heraldry Committee and the chancellor of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Order of the Lion of Finland.
Nuorteva has also been actively participating in international activities. Even after the end of his tenure as the director general, he will continue with international duties assigned to him with separate decisions. One of the most important of these duties is Nuorteva’s position in the International Advisory Council of UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme, for which he has been appointed until 31 December 2023.
Päivi Happonen, PhD, docent, works as the research director and the head of Research and Expert Services at the National Archives. In her work, she is focusing on the development of digital research methods and infrastructures for the study of history, as well as digital document management and information management for the public administration.
During the transition period, Happonen’s duties as the head of Research and Expert Services will be taken over by Vili Haukkovaara, M.Sc. (Tech), Development Manager. He will transfer to the position of an acting service area head from the Infrastructure Services of the National Archives.
