Renovation of the main building of the National Archives to start in the spring of 2026
There will be changes to the services.
A large-scale renovation is planned for the National Archives’ Helsinki office at Rauhankatu 17, scheduled to start in April or May 2026.
After the renovation, the National Archives will have modern customer service, work and archive facilities. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
We consider it important that our customers are aware of the upcoming changes to our services and that they can prepare for them in time.
We will provide more information about the renovation schedule and its impact on our services as soon as the plans become more specific.
Our services and materials will be moved
During the renovation, we will move our services and materials from Rauhankatu to temporary facilities located in the Helsinki region and to our other offices.
The move to temporary facilities will begin in stages around the turn of the year 2025–2026. Temporary interruptions to our services may occur at that time.
We will later provide more detailed information about the branch offices to which the materials will be moved and what the arrangements will be for accessing the materials.
Changes to the use of space at the Rauhankatu premises
The main building of the National Archives was completed in 1890, and it has been expanded in 1928 and 1972. The building complex is a nationally important, protected building of high value and symbolic significance.
Senate Properties will implement the renovation and changes taking into account the cultural heritage values of the site. According to the plans, the National Archives’ customer service facilities will remain in their current locations after the renovation.
The property will also have a common working environment for the State which will also be used by other agencies in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture in addition to the National Archives. The shared use of the facilities will promote cooperation between government agencies and make the use of the facilities more efficient.
The changes to the premises will reduce the size of the Rauhankatu archive facilities. Because of this, some of the materials moved due to the renovation will remain permanently at other branch offices of the National Archives.
