Research collaboration
The National Archives of Finland actively collaborates with researchers and research institutions in multiple ways.
The collaboration is usually related to developing the availability and usability of the National Archives’ materials and it can involve the digitisation of archives, AI-based content detection, or developing the use of born-digital material, for example, or it can be related the development of services supporting research more widely.
The research collaboration can include:
- Survey of topic-specific materials in the National Archives' collections
- Digitisation of materials
- Content detection of digitised handwritten text to machine-readable format in Finnish and Swedish
- Content detection of digitised typewritten text
- Content detection of register data from different tables, card indexes and forms (e.g. census data)
- Joint funding applications for developing research services
- Combining digital and digitised materials into time series data
- Developing AI-based methods to support data analysis
Project planning
If you are planning a research project that would involve extensive use of the National Archives’ collections, determine which materials interest you and what are your needs for data processing well in advance.
Contact the National Archives of Finland if you know you will need:
- Expert assistance in finding research data from our collections
- Digitisation of paper materials
- Large amounts of material processed using digital methods
- A partner in developing digital research methods for archival materials
If you are applying for funding for your project, we recommend that you contact us at the early stages of planning, preferably about two months before the end of the funding application period.
