Changes to the use of space at the Rauhankatu premises

The main building of the National Archives was completed in 1890, and it has been expanded in 1928 and 1972. The building complex is a nationally important, protected building of high value and symbolic significance.

Senate Properties will implement the renovation and changes taking into account the cultural heritage values of the site. According to the plans, the National Archives’ customer service facilities will remain in their current locations after the renovation.

The property will also have a common working environment for the State which will also be used by other agencies in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture in addition to the National Archives, such as the Finnish National Agency for Education and the Research Council of Finland. The shared use of the facilities will promote cooperation between government agencies and make the use of the facilities more efficient.

The changes to the premises will reduce the size of the Rauhankatu archive facilities. Because of this, some of the materials moved due to the renovation will remain permanently at other branch offices of the National Archives.
